CAREFEST VOLUNTEERS NEEDED SEPTEMBER 25
CareFest® is a national
catalytic community service day that inspires people to "bee Caretagious"
(continue to care) all year.
Volunteers are needed for a
myriad of projects, painting, mulching and cleanup throughout St. Petersburg
on Saturday, September 25. The annual week of compassion-related activities,
sponsored by Somebody Cares Tampa Bay under the umbrella of CareFest USA,
culminates with a day of service that gives back to the community –
benefitting individual homeowners and non-profit organizations.
In Westminster Heights the
sponsored project this year will be work on the 55th St. access to the
Pinellas Trail. Please volunteer for this worthwhile project. The City
requires you to register as a volunteer and bring your completed
registration point at 7:30 AM, before returning to Westminster Heights to
work on the project. To save you the trouble, Neighborhood Association
President Gloria Shingles has again volunteered to collect forms and deliver
them in bulk, so you don't have to!
INFORMATION FROM PHILIP HARRIS,
NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNER
In addition to City
employees, Westminster Heights residents will again be supported by a team
of volunteers, this time from
Operation PAR, Inc.,
Live Free! Operation PAR has been putting Florida's families first by
combating substance abuse for more than 37 years since incorporating as a
nonprofit organization in 1970.
Work on Sept. 25 will be
installing more bollards to complete the traffic-barrier down 55th St. at
the side of the Royal Palm Cemetery as far as the Pinellas Trail. Finally,
we will have done away with the problem of rogue motorists using the
cemetery as a short cut between 55th and 58th Streets.
According to Mr. Harris (Aug.
27), after completion of the bollard barrier, the City will construct an
extension of the sidewalk on the west side of 55th St as far as the Pinellas
Trail, so that it runs the whole length of 55th St. He is waiting for expert
advice from the S.W. Water Management District, on how to bridge the
drainage area adjacent to the trail, which is susceptible to flooding.
Note (Sept. 12): An
additional 7 full-size palm trees have been planted on the 55th St. S.
extension between 5th Ave. S. and the Pinellas Trail, to add to the 5
recently planted there. This was an independent action by the City Parks
Dept. While they will help to provide a barrier to unauthorized traffic,
still cutting across from 5th Ave. S. to 58th St., some of the gaps between
them are wide enough to drive through and bollards will still be needed.
