Crime rate drops dramatically
Officer Patterson reported at the
Neighborhood Association meeting on April 16 that in the month ending April
15 there were ZERO burglaries, robberies, or thefts, vehicle,
residential, or commercial, in Westminster Heights. This is a record.
Congratulations to watchful neighbors and Officer Patterson.
The meeting was also addressed by Cassandra
Jackson, a member of the City of St. Petersburg Code Enforcement Board.
Ms Jackson volunteered to take a copy of our current list of alleged code
violations, that have been reported to
codes@westminsterheights.com,
and follow up for us, to see what actions have been taken by the City's
Codes Enforcement. Thanks, Ms Jackson.

What's wrong with the Rays' stadium
plan?

The Association was recently addressed by
John Burgess of Preserve our Wallets and Waterfront (POWW). That's the
group opposing the Rays' proposal to have our city sell publicly owned
land to benefit a privately owned entity. The plan involves landfilling
more of
our waterfront, to build a new stadium. The group claims this would have a serious impact on our environment, our
parkland, our downtown museums, theaters and restaurants, and traffic and parking
availability in the surrounding area and beyond. For
more information, and to sign up for e-mail reports on the campaign,

"I can't form an opinion on what I have
right now. I just want to know how much it is going to cost money-wise,
and I don't know that yet." Council Member Wengay Newton
quoted in the St Pete Times 4/17/09.

Proposed St. Petersburg dog park runs
into opposition
"I can't support spending nearly a
quarter million dollars on a dog park. That's just me," said council
member Wengay Newton, who walked out of the meeting before a vote
was taken. "It's nothing against Mr. Danner. It is about being fiscally
responsible."

ST. PETERSBURG POLICE FORFEITURE PROGRAM GRANT
FREE CLASSES FOR YOUR CHILDREN
Once again
the City is using money from the St. Petersburg Police Forfeiture Fund,
funded by the proceeds from selling seized property such as drug dealers'
cars, to fund recreational activities for local children under 18 to "keep
them off the streets."

We have
again applied for a grant to provide for free recreational classes for
Association members' children under 18. Last year (2006-07) the grant we
received covered only karate lessons. For the coming year (starting December
2007 through September 2008) we have applied for funds to cover any and all
classes offered at the Northwest Recreational Center on 22 Ave. N. at 58th
St., including cheerleading, gymnastics, hip-hop, swimming, etc., as well as
karate.
Our application procedure has
changed – please apply to

NEIGHBORHOOD PLAN
The
City of St. Petersburg Neighborhood Plan for Westminster Heights is still under development and a presentation to
the Association is projected for some time in
November 2007, the City planners tell us.
This is the
Plan that was supposed to be ready in October. Still, with the average
turnout for the public meetings that led up to it a dismal six people or so,
who are we to complain?

Meanwhile
people continue to drive from the end on 5th Ave. South onto the cemetery,
around the barricade erected by the City. This barricade was erected
supposedly to address our number one traffic concern identified at these
meetings, and has proved worse than useless, as there are now two tracks
over the grass instead of one.

CODE VIOLATIONS
Please
e-mail any code violation you see, however minor, to the Neighborhood
Association codes representative at
codes@westminsterheights.com. The violator will NOT be given your
name. Only by being vigilant in this respect can we eliminate problems
before they get out of hand and thereby preserve the quality of our
neighborhood.
So-called 'tree-line parking' (parking wholly or partly on the grass at
the edge of the street, whether trees are present or not) is a
violation.
Note:
If you see anyone in our area or adjacent areas attempting to sell food
at the front of a residential property please act immediately by
reporting it to Officer Patterson of the Community Service Squad at 727 551 3183. This
problem was stamped out a few months ago but cooking equipment has
reappeared in at least one front yard.
PARKING TICKETS
If you
park at the side of the road, your vehicle must be parked in the
direction of traffic flow on that side of the road. Tickets are being
issued to violators. Fines are in the region of $30. Don't say we didn't
warn you.
